My latest blog-post deals with setting, which is one of the important building blocks of writing. This often complements backstory, which in turn helps novels to resonate with readers.

Great blog, Susan! You really captured the mood that special destinations can engender. Until I read it, almost all I knew about Melbourne was that it boasts a fantastic cricket stadium, the Melbourne Cricket Ground or MCG, better known locally as 'The G'. Having said that a pal from my youth, John Niewenhuyzen, became a professor at Melbourne and later the Secretary for Immigration for Australia!

Thanks, Dave. Before my sister moved to Melbourne the only thing I knew about it was the annual horse race called the Melbourne Cup, during which time almost everything in Melbourne closes down so that people can watch the race. I only knew about this because it formed part of the plot in a Dick Francis novel I read years ago. Last year I happened to be in Melbourne on Melbourne Cup day, but I didn't watch the race. There were so many other things to do and not everything was shut down.
